Every vaper runs into problems eventually, and knowing basic vape troubleshooting can save you from tossing a perfectly good device. Burnt hits, leaking tanks, weak vapor, and blinking lights all have simple fixes once you know what to look for. At Sky Smoke & Vape, our staff diagnoses and fixes these issues daily — here are the most common problems and their solutions.
When Your Vape Isn’t Producing Vapor
No vapor is frustrating. First, check the battery—is it charged? This sounds obvious, but dead batteries are the most common culprit. If the battery is charged, check if the device is actually firing. Some devices have buttons that need to be pressed a certain number of times to activate. Check your manual. If the device is firing but producing no vapor, the issue is usually the coil. Try a new coil. If a new coil works, your old coil was burnt out. If a new coil doesn’t work, the issue is the tank—maybe the connection is loose or there’s a manufacturing defect. Tighten all connections first. If tightening doesn’t fix it, there’s an internal issue with the tank and you need a replacement.
Burnt Taste and Weak Flavor
Burnt taste means your coil is degraded. The solution is replacing it. But if the problem happens to new coils almost immediately, you’re priming incorrectly or running wattage too high. Make sure you’re priming new coils properly (let liquid saturate the cotton before vaping). Check that you’re not exceeding the coil’s recommended wattage range. If you’re within range and priming properly but coils still burn out fast, switch to a different e-liquid. Some liquids contain compounds that gunk coils faster. Weak flavor that’s not burnt taste usually means the coil is just degraded. Clean it and see if flavor returns. If flavor remains weak after cleaning, replace the coil.
Leaking Tanks and Mess
Leaking is annoying but usually fixable. First, check that all components are properly sealed. Remove the tank and ensure the coil is screwed in tightly and the glass is seated properly. Check the fill cap—make sure it’s completely closed. If everything is sealed and you’re still leaking, the issue is usually an air vent. Your tank has air holes that let pressure equalize. If these are blocked, pressure builds and forces liquid out. Clean the air vents and ensure they’re open. If the coil itself is faulty (defective seal), replace it. Some tanks are prone to leaking if not stored upright. If your tank leaks when horizontal but not vertical, store it upright or invest in a tank known for not leaking in any orientation.
Battery Issues and Performance Problems
If your device randomly shuts off or cuts power suddenly, the battery is probably failing. Batteries degrade with time and use. A battery more than a year old is probably due for replacement. If your device isn’t reaching the wattage you’re setting, the battery might be weak. Try charging fully and testing. If performance doesn’t improve, the battery needs replacement. Never use a damaged battery. Physical damage, extreme heat exposure, or just age means it’s time for a new one. Battery performance directly affects your entire vaping experience, so this is worth fixing.
When You Have Proper Vapor But No Flavor
This is usually either a burnt coil or vaper’s tongue (when you vape the same flavor so long your palate becomes desensitized). If the taste is actively burnt or chemical, it’s the coil. Replace it. If the flavor just tastes muted or faint, try switching flavors for a day or two. Vaping something completely different sometimes resets your palate. If you return to your original flavor and it’s still muted, the coil needs replacing. Coils gradually lose the ability to properly saturate, which affects flavor. Fresh coil usually fixes this.
Gurgling Tanks and Spitting Coils
Gurgling sounds when you draw usually mean the tank is flooded or the coil is oversaturated. Take the device off your lips and press the button for a second without inhaling to blow some liquid out of the coil. Try again. If gurgling persists, your airflow might be set too low. Increase airflow. If you’re still getting gurgling, the coil seal might be compromised. Replace it. Spitting (liquid coming into your mouth) is usually coil oversaturation or a flooded tank. Blow excess liquid out and increase airflow. If this persists, replace the coil.
